What I've been up to

Thought I'd share a few pics today of what has been keeping me away from the computer for so long (aka not visiting you all).
Yesterday was the first day of our week of vacation Bible school at church.  I'm the director again this year so besides all the literature and paperwork duties I also took on most of the decorating.  Now I did get some help from my church family and especially my own (hubby and daughter).
Our theme was Lifeway Christian Stores Submerged program.  I decided to create an underwater scene in the classroom area so.....in the pics you will find spray foam coral as well as some pool noodle kind.

There are also some sea fans made from flattened cedar branches that were spray painted.  There are sea urchins made from styrofoam and toothpicks.  If you look really close you can see some tiny shrimp on the orange coral made from drinking straws.  I did a little paper mache to create the rocks.

Here we have some brain coral made with a paper mache form covered with packing peanuts.  There are sea turtles made from shells and foam and crabs from shells and pipe cleaners.  The starfish, sand dollars and shells were made with baking soda and cornstarch.

The sea creatures (except for the blowups) were drawn on poster paper and painted.

The jellyfish were made with paper lanterns and bath scrubbies.

The sanctuary was turned into a submarine so we have lots of pies, cogs and gears.  The port holes are full of lots of fun fish and other sea creatures.  Most of these were drawn using transparencies with a few freehand additions from my daughter.  Lots of painting here and some add on gears and control panels made with foam board and bottle caps.

My hubby created the arch with some PVC pipe that we covered with paper and added some critters and sea life to.

My daughter did all of the small critters and window panels.  Thankfully we had some help.  Hours and hours went in to this and the smiles on the kids faces were worth every second.
Now that all the deco work is done I can get back to my "regular" schedule.  Whatever that may be.  LOL

  1. This is fabulous, Tracy! We just wrapped up our version of Submerged at my church. The whole church looked like this for over 800 children. It was pure chaos, but I know the kids had a blast, and lots of good stuff was said about everything. I didn't take many pics just because kids were around all the time, but I'll share a picture of the door to my room later this week. So fun! Thanks for sharing, love!

  15. Oh, Tracy! I've been wanting to visit and see more details, but WOW! You and your family sure did a FABULOUS job of creating a real underwater theme and "feel" to the entire church and where they did their crafts. Congratulations once again for being the director of VBS. Sadly, it's something that enough don't help with, but they are blessed to have you...and they know it. And may God continue to bless you, as you serve Him. After all, that's why we do whatever we do. Love you lots, my friend! You are a joy and treasure, and someday we shall meet here or there! xoxo
